Top 5 Gorgeous Scenic Drives Near Asheville, NC To Enjoy This Fall

For us here in the Asheville area of Western North Carolina, it means we have quick access to some of the most gorgeous scenic drives you’ll ever experience! We’ve curated a list of our favorite drives for you so you can make the most of your Waynesville, NC getaway!

Blue Ridge Parkway – This well-known drive is famous for a reason! It winds through North Carolina all the way to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Pick it up just south of Waynesville, NC or drive east to Asheville and pick it up just east of the city. Consider downloading the Blue Ridge Parkway Travel Planner App to have instant access to information about scenic spots, historic areas, hiking trails, impressive overlooks, interpretive exhibits, visitor centers and so much more!

Looking Glass Falls – A beautiful view of this scenic waterfall awaits you, and you don’t even need to leave your car to see it! Take an hour-long drive from our Inn in Waynesville along US-276 and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage along the way. You can make it a loop by returning through Asheville along NC-280 or you can turn around and enjoy the drive all over again! It’s also just a quick detour to visit Brevard, NC, known for its music school and its unique population of white squirrels!

Great Smoky Mountains Expressway – This four-lane road takes you through the heart of the Smoky Mountains from Clyde, through Waynesville, and all the way past Bryson City. Pick it up from our Inn by hopping onto US-74 going west and enjoy up to 43 miles of gorgeous rolling hills and colorful autumn leaves!

Mountain Waters Scenic Byway – Take the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway out of Waynesville and then head a bit south to enjoy this 64.5-mile scenic route that will take you through Beechertown, Franklin, and Highlands, NC. There’s plenty of opportunities along this route to enjoy scenic overlooks, delicious small-town restaurants, and all kinds of outdoor recreational activities. 

Tail of the Dragon – While this route is short on scenic overlooks, it more than makes up for it with the exciting twists and turns that cut through the mountains from NC to Tennessee. The 11-mile drive winds in and out through a beautiful, thick forest with stops to enjoy small-town America and perhaps to pick up a souvenir or a quick bite at a local restaurant.
